An International Conference on Gender based Hate-Speech, organized by project Op:COde.
“While gender equality is a key pillar of human rights, sexism and gender stereotypes have steadily grown throughout Europe and beyond in the last years. In terms of the legal status of women as equal citizens, progress has surely been made throughout the last decades, but unfortunately actual gender equality is still an objective that is far from fruition. The COVID-19 pandemic has especially made this abundantly clear with gender based violence increasing across the world.
We believe gender equality means equal rights for women and men in all spheres of public and private life. This is a value we strongly uphold in the organisations that are part of the pan-European Op:Code project. Therefore, for our project’s second international conference we wish to dig deeper into the different forms of gender based hate speech, its prominence and its effects, as well as methods for combating this type of hate speech. This is a crucial topic in the current context as sexism and gender stereotypes often lead to a spill-over effect through which violence against women is normalised and even justified.”
